A few months ago, we started building a specialized Legal AI system designed to automate some of the most time-consuming (i.e. expensive) tasks faced every day by lawyers.

After a many iterations and exchanges with professionals from the best global legal teams, we reflected on how we could build an AI system capable of addressing real needs, to accelerate legal work today.

This led us to realize some important points, make clear choices, and deliver Copilex, a Legal AI assistant tailored to business needs.

Legal AI cannot be like other AIs

While AI services already benefit many industries, legitimate concerns remain when it comes to using them for legal work.

First, about privacy and confidentiality. There can be no Legal AI without the absolute respect for legal privilege and the confidentiality of attorney-client communications.  Any Legal AI solution should guarantee the highest level of security and confidentiality. Higher than what is accepted for other AI services.

Second, about the reliability of the information delivered.  While extremely powerful, current large language models (LLMs) remain prone to inaccuracies and biases, raising important liability risks. Legal AI services should go beyond the mere use of LLMs, and combine all technologies necessary to guarantee the highest level of accuracy possible.

Third, about what a Legal AI system should actually do. Legal AI is meant to support lawyers in their daily workflow. For companies, it should help them do their legal work faster and more efficiently. Doing legal research and answer random questions is part of the job, but not only. In fact, the core of the work is about reviewing complex business and legal documents, reasoning, and delivering attorney-class-work product. A truly helpful Legal AI should help accelerating these tasks.

Finally, about the performance. AI services generally promise substantial productivity gains, often supported by impressive numbers. Yet, applied to the complexity of legal work these numbers do not mean much, because the benchmarks on which they rely are disconnected from reality. Building an effective Legal AI requires adequate evaluation platform before claiming any result.

Copilex, a Legal AI assistant tailored to business needs

Based on these observations, we made some choices that are the foundations of Copilex.

Built by lawyers, with field experts: Being founded by an international dispute resolution lawyer with 15 years of experience, and an experienced engineer, PhD in AI, is a good starting point, but it is not sufficient to ensure that our solution fully grasps the complexities of the job.

That is why we teamed up with the best experts in the Legal, AI, and Security fields, attorneys, in-house, researchers, and developers to help us make Copilex the best Legal AI for business legal work.

Confidential by design: Because the best AI models run on cloud (an we believe will continue to do so in the future, where almost all companies now store the entirety of their data anyway), we believe that the data shared with AI systems should be protected at the highest level possible.

That is why Copilex applies the most stringent security measures of the industry and goes one step further by integrating Sentinel, a proprietary model, that pseudonymizes all sensitive information at the outset to protect our users’ data and guarantee that no confidential information leaves the firm’s premises.

End-to-end legal reasoning:  To guarantee accurate results, sourcing the information is good but not sufficient. Only by understanding the reasoning behind the AI’s conclusion can our users identify its potential flaws and biases.

That is why we have designed Copilex as a legal reasoning engine, combining multiple technologies  into a specialized system dedicated to legal work, to perform - and display- all types of reasoning regularly done by lawyers when performing legal work.

Use-case oriented: While Copilex is meant to accelerate all aspects of legal work in the near future, we decided to focus on a limited set of specific tasks at the moment, and to do it better than anyone else.

Our choice was to concentrate our efforts on business legal tasks, with a specific focus on contract analysis and contract generation. That is because we have identified there, with our first users, the most precise use-cases for which Copilex can provide a valuable solution. And also because this is the first logical step toward the construction of a general legal reasoning engine that could serve way more use-cases in the near future.

Workflow focused: While working with our first users, we realized that not only some tasks were extremely time-consuming, but also that moving from one task to another took them a lot of time, because they needed to constantly change tools.

That is why Copilex is built to allow lawyers to perform the full workflow needed for each task in one single place, with as little friction as possible, for real efficiency gains.

Evaluation based: Having explored the reality behind some of our competitors’ claims, we realized that Copilex’s performance had to be evaluated in a way that would be much more connected to the lawyers’ reality.

To that end, we did not only develop features in close relationship with our first users, but we also developed with them the methodology and the benchmarks to evaluate their performance for each use-case.

Frugal by specialization: One last choice, but not the least, regards the ecological impact of Copilex. LLMs are compute and energy intense. We built Copilex to use such models only when absolutely necessary for accuracy reasons. This is made possible by breaking down each tasks to be performed for a given workflow, and apply smaller models or alternative technologies capable of performing these tasks efficiently.

Based on these choices, we believe that Copilex can soon become the reference Legal AI system in Europe, and we are working hard to make it happen.

Beyond Legal AI for business

A few words to conclude about our vision, because Copilex is not just a Legal AI assistant, it is also a startup that wants to change the world.

We believe that AI technologies do not only represent a promise of increased efficiency and productivity. They offer us a formidable opportunity to make law and justice more accessible and equitable, and that will revolutionize the practice of law in many ways we cannot anticipate today.

By allowing legal professionals to focus on more critical aspects of their work, by giving better access to legal information, new tools using AI can help empower businesses and individuals to navigate the legal system with greater confidence and autonomy.

AI technologies will also likely contribute to more transparency, more predictability, and will  help identify - and reduce - human biases at play at every level of the legal system, thereby participating to a justice that is administered more fairly and impartially.

We are firmly convinced that, used properly, these new technologies can help achieving tremendous progress on our quest to a more accessible and equitable judicial system.
